Basaltic Magma (also referred to as Mafic Magma)

45-55% Silicon Dioxide (SiO_2); rich in Magnesium (Mg), Iron (Fe) (hence the name Mafic) and Calcium (Ca). Because of their low Silica content, Basaltic magmas tend to be fairly fluid (low viscosity) and can reach temperatures of about 1000 to 1200^oC.

Basaltic magmas cool down to create a dark, very dense basaltic rock. Many of the basalts on Earth can be found in the Hawaiian Islands—in fact, all of the islands in the Hawaiian Island chain were made up because of these basaltic lava flows.
