Menthol is an organic compound made synthetically or obtained from peppermint or other mint oils, that is known for its strong minty odor.  It is a waxy, crystalline substance, clear or white in color, which is solid at room temperature and melts slightly above.  Menthol has local anesthetic and counter-irritant qualities, and it is widely used medicinally to relieve minor throat irritation, sunburns, as a decongestant, and as an antispasmodic and muscle relaxant.  Additionally, menthol can be used in various pesticides, food products for flavor, mouthwashes, toothpaste, perfumes, and as a cigarette additive.
